What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a science that deals with the principles that there are reflexes in the feet and hand relative to every organ, gland and part of the body.

The history of reflexology is believed to date back to Egyptian times, 2330 B.C. where hieroglyphs were found on the tombs of the ancient Egyptian Kings showing them receiving work on their hands and feet. It is further believed that reflexology has ties back to ancient Chinese healing that includes work with the meridians of the body. Although Chinese acupuncture recognizes 12 meridians running through the body, reflexology recognizes 10 zones.

It helps to relieve tension and relaxes the body. It increases nerve and blood supply and helps to normalize and balance various functions of the body.

"Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep." (Source: Mayo Clinic)

Reflexology releases uric acid, a by-product of kidney function which causes bodily "congestion", from the feet and hands.

The feet and hands are furthest from the heart, where cirulcation is the slowest in the body. Keeping this in mind, it is no wonder that arthritis, for example, shows up first in the joints of the feet and hands.

Foot Reflexology

What to Expect

Your appointment will begin with an initial consultation while your feet are soaked in warm water. Afterwards, essential oils with lotion are applied to the bottom of the feet.

You will then lie back in a comfortable chair with your feet slightly raised. An initial assessment of the feet will be performed. Pressure from the thumb will then be systematically applied to the feet, always starting with the left foot.

During your session you can rest, talk, or even fall asleep. The healing and relaxing benefits will still be received.
